Finding Good Domain Names

Latest statistics show approximately 83 million .com domains are currently registered. That’s a lot of different domain names! Out of that number, many are very desirable names purchased perhaps years ago, just parked in some quiet spot just waiting for someone to offer enough money to buy it. The most common domain names like winner.com or rockmusic.com are already taken by Internet investors who resell the rights to the names when the price is right. Can you imagine owning www.elvis.com? Can you imagine how much money you could make with a name like that?

There are several hundred potential combinations for two letter sequences.  If you’re wanting to register a short name like “TR” then you just won’t find it!  Even using numbers in the name, almost every single web address seems to be taken. Of course, domain registrars now mandate a 3-character minimum length for dot com names, so it wouldn’t be an option now anyway.

Even many of the short three-letter name sequences are already registered. Adding digits to a domain name might allow you to register it, but this creates names that look silly. I’m sure you’ve seen domain names like “xxxx445.com” that are obviously junk sites. If you’re really in the market to acquire great domains and unique domain names, they’ll often expire only to be auctioned off through unique domain name sales. Rarely does a good domain name expire long enough for you to find. There are simply too many domain investors with automated software that scoops them up as fast as they are back on the market.

The longer the domain name that you choose, the more that the possibilities are that it could be available. This is assuming you are willing to accept random letters, numbers, or dashes in the name. For example, many organizations have 4 letter acronyms so you may have a chance using over 4 letters to get the domain name that you want in acronym style!

Of course many of the registered domains are never visited, with many of them simply parked with Google Adsense or other ads on the site in case someone stumbles on it. There are so many combinations and back door tricks to domain name cataloging and classification until the possibilities are endless.

The objective when choosing a domain name is to find one that closely resembles who you are and that gives you an identity or brand on the Internet. While it is harder now to find these names, it is still possible with some effort.
