How do you put up a website without paying for web hosting?

Not asking about free web hosting. I mean, how do you setup a website without using a web hosting service. Obviously they run their own website and support other peoples. There can’t just be a never ending chain of web hosts supporting each other. So there should be a way to just buy a domain and host your own website, right?

Any reliable cheap host without contract and allows multiple domains besides Hostgator?

Hi, I like hostgator and they seem to be the most recommended out there. But I’d prefer to use a variety of hosting companies to build a network of websites. Most competitors I find that can compete with Hostgator want you to pay a setup fee or pay for a whole year or two of service. Any recommendations?
